North Devon Hospice
The place
A special place that offers care and support to families affected by a life-limiting illness.
The garden is a therapeutic space, an area to retreat to for quiet reflection or to spend peaceful time with family and friends whilst visiting the Hospice. Ian and his team of volunteers maintain six acres of ornamental gardens including a rose garden, physic garden, kitchen garden, retreat garden, two lakes, and a Mazzard orchard.
The brief
For the last seven years Ian has been the head gardener for the Hospice and works with a team of volunteers to maintain and develop the gardens.
The design
The gardens evolve over time and Ian is always working on the next project to keep the gardens fresh. Recently the lakes have been redeveloped, as have the kitchen garden and orchard. Both are used to help keep the Hospice kitchens full of fresh, organic produce. Design must be in keeping with the spirit of the Hospice and most projects are implemented by Ian and his team of volunteers.
